GOogle custom search engine
Google is such a popular tool in our society that its very own name as become a verb/ "Just Google It" is a phrase uttered likely thousands of times each day. Most people are familiar with Google Scholar, a safe way to obtain scholarly research using the Google search interface. But, this is not the only tool that Google has created in order to aid in safe searching.
The Google Custom Search Engine is a way to create search parameters for a search. It is great for use in classrooms because it limits the amount of websites that are searched for information. The creator of the engine selects which sites will be included in the searches and once created is able to embed the link into a website or send it out alone. This could be used to teach safe internet browsing, how to choose reliable websites, and internet safety.
When I created my Google Custom Search Engines, they took about 20 minutes, and most of that time was spent finding the sites I wanted to be included in my search engine. I wanted them to be reliable and accurate meaning I had to do a little more background work before including them. Once I had done so, the search engine was easy to create and share. Here are two different examples I created.
